MORE THAN OLD BUILDINGS.?.

What does the word 'heritage' mean to you?  People's first thoughts are often about castles and fine art.  However heritage is more than just old buildings.  It includes the history and culture of local communities and can be used as a tool to promote involvement, develop new skills and create a sense of ownership and pride in local communities.  The Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) funds all sizes and types of heritage projects, including oral history, cultural and local traditions, heritage associated with language or dialect, industrial, maritime and transport heritage and the natural heritage.

It has also introduced a new grants programme 'Young Roots', in partnership with YouthLink Scotland, which aims to involve 13-20 year olds in finding out about and celebrating their heritage.  Grants between £5,000 and £25,000 are available for projects, developed by young people. These projects can involve, for example, music, arts, I.T, photography, radio and theatre to record and celebrate heritage.

HLF recently awarded a Young Roots grant in Edinburgh to Sikh Sanjog for the 'Back to the Future of Our Roots' project.  It will provide Scottish Sikh young people with an opportunity to explore their cultural roots through a series of workshops, looking into myths and misconceptions.  The project will include a travelling exhibition and a diary documenting the project for young people from Sikh and other cultures.

HLF is keen to increase applications from community and voluntary groups, particularly within Social Inclusion Partnership areas in Edinburgh.  If you are interested in finding out more about Young Roots or any of HLF's other grants programmes, contact the Development Team on 0131 225 9450 or email deirdre@hlf.org.uk
