Case Studies 2005 - Youth Media Centre

Youth Media Centre

A permanent base for youth media activity

Youth Media Centre is a part of Helsinki youth department.  We offer our services to young people (aged usually 13-24) who are living in the Helsinki area.
When young people first come to the youth media centre they do not have to have any skills with computers or cameras.  This is a place they can learn by doing with our music and media specialist youth workers.
We have digital dv - and still cameras, microphones, mini disc recorders etc. that young people can use.

Facilities and Opportunities

Recording studio
The beginners of the computer music are able to produce their own creations as far as a demo-CD.  The staff will attend to provide training from morning to evening.  Some demo-recordings had already been made, video background music created and also advertised for the radio network.

Broadcasts have also been made directly from the studio.  Originally the recording studio was meant to be for movie music but because of the excellent equipment it fits to a more versatile activity too.

In the Youth Media the rule is that by doing one learns.

The activity may be shooting video, recording, cooking, reporting - anything. By practice one will learn to create with chosen equipment, take care of the said equipment and to create social relationships as well as to co-operate with team mates.

To meet the young as a young person, to give artistic freedom and personal space is our mission.  Technical assistance is given on the ground level.  Learning happens on the trial and error principle.  Also we sometimes leave the camera alone and discuss the various everyday problems.  We chat easily about the positive things and listen to the latest jokes gladly.

Continuity of things is our part in the play.  The batteries must be charged.  We repair and renovate everything that is possible to us.  We buy second-hand stuff, take contributions and the clean the place together.  The information is given through email or the web.  The computers are used to the point possible until replaced.  We proudly present the antique atari game consoles and the Commodore computers with accessories.

There are three computer units ready for instant use for 3-D modelling, photo and sound processing.  The software includes i.g.3D max and Adobe Photoshop 6.

The online live multimedia broadcasts are produced from separate Gloria estrade.  The happening is on the stage, cameras are running and the director is directing.  Through the internet the broadcast can be seen everywhere in the world complete with sound.

Evening happenings are organised once a month.  Various artists will attend accompanied by instructed multi-camera coverage and debating about the specific matter in relaxed atmosphere.  Everything goes on improvised together with the largest possible audience.  As a rule these evening happenings are free of alcohol and drugs.  This goes for the other activities also.

We tour the various events around the year and report about them.  Happenings organised by the Helsinki City Youth Department include Dance Action, Juvenile Culture, Sound and Frenzy, the Kaisaniemi Pop concert and others.  Local happenings are Urmas, Asphalt Trembles etc.

There are a few annual weekend camps on the island of Bengtsar near the Hanko peninsula.  These are held in the spirit of recreation and rest in the nature - combined with media productions.  On the weekends various creations emerge, including short films as well as cooking shows.  Sauna, swimming, sleeping and eating complete the program.

Movies are viewed at the opening nights.  The widescreen video projector and the 5.1 surround sound system provide hefty sounds for the young people's own movies, complete with the biggest cinema sofas in the town - guaranteed.  Occasionally commercial dvd movies are shown, but not the very latests releases.

The Internet

The Youth Media Centre maintains internet sites for various groups.

Free Your Mind - www.yle.fi/free

The Free Your Mind website is a common virtual world of the Youth Centre and the Finnish Radio Network YLE.  It provides an arena for showing youth knowledge in the multimedia sector, it presents artistic views and frees the stream of words, digital pictures and sound.

In the "Free Your Mind" you can find for instance video coverage of Dance Action, Aani ja Vimma (Sound and Fury), the championships of the Skateboard in Finland, Red Bull City Flight, Media festivals and the various other happenings in the Gloria Hall.
