How did the young people get involved and how was contact made? It varied from project to project but some were accessed through the youth service identifying groups, recruitment through New Deal and through existing partnerships with organisations supporting young people. Top
Did you use any specific planning tools or processes? Each project was planned by the museum leading that particular project and reflected the interests and needs of the particular community within the museum's catchment area. Top
What took place? Over three years 16 projects in museums took place, two seminars and a conference were held, three reports produced and a website set up. Top
How did the youth workers and arts workers work in partnerships? Youth workers tended not to become involved in museums as many youth workers feel their young people would not be interested in museums. Where youth workers did become involved, i.e our Leicester City Museum project, it was very successful. We hope that youth workers will be much more involved in future projects. Top
How was the project evaluated? Each museum evaluated their own project and collated a report from information gathered, which was published in our third report. We also commissioned an independent evaluator to undertake specific areas of evaluation again findings were published in our report. Top

Why was this a good piece of work with young people? This was a good piece of work for young people and museums. Two groups which tend not to have a lot to do with each other. Both groups discovered that actually they had a lot to offer each other. Museums weren't just dusty archives or irrelevant objects and young people brought energy, new ideas, enthusiasm, new technologies etc. The programme opened a lot of eyes and broadened a lot of minds and it wasn't just those of the young people. What lessons were learned? This was a very long and complex project running over three years. We learnt a lot, we made lots of mistakes, sometimes the mistakes worked better than what we planned, some parts of the project went well and some didn't. We encouraged our museums to report the bad bits alongside the good bits. All the reports are published in our third report and well worth a read. Top
What next? We are setting up a programme of work for museums and young refugees and asylum seekers.
