What was the aim of the project?

The objective of the ISH Institute residency is to give young people the opportunity to work with international artists and learn new skills in several different areas of stage production.  ISH encourages the young people to take an active part in creating their own show by using their unique talents to express themselves on stage.  Consequently, the young people feel ownership and a great deal of responsibility for the project which can be seen in their creativity, dedication, co-operation and interest in making the show a success.

How did the young people get involved?

The Presenter is responsible for recruiting and enrolling the young people.  For example, the Playhouse Square Center contacted local high schools and at risk performing arts after-school programmes.  The young people must commit to attending all the rehearsals for the full residency.

Top

What 'needs' were you trying to address?

Several needs were addressed, e.g develop young people's interest and participation in stagecraft, promote a cultural and social integration among the young people, encourage youngsters to participate in exercise without competition, etc.

Who was involved?

Several months before the residency begins, the ISH Co-ordinator/Producer is in direct contact with the Presenter  to discuss the scheduling of the project.  The Presenter then creates a schedule based on the information from these conversations and arranges what rehearsal and performance spaces will be used for the residency.  The schedule should be flexible since some activities may need to be altered in order to meet the needs of the young people.

During the residency there are daily conversations between the Company Manager and the Presenter to update any changes to the schedule.  Also, ISH and the Presenter representative meet every night after a rehearsal to evaluate the day and what needs to be addressed the following day.  This discussion ensures that everyone knows about changes to the schedule.

Please note that the local artists do not have to attend every single evaluation but need to be at the evaluations on the days that they have assisted ISH.

Top

Did you use any specific planning tools or processes?

An optional event that the Presenter is highly recommended to include in the residency schedule is to provide free tickets for ISH and all the young people to attend a performance in the theatre.  For instance, the Playhouse Square Center gave the young people, local artists and ISH staff tickets to see a new show by MOMIX, a US modern dance theatre company.  This evening was a great success and for many of the young people it was their first experience in a theatre.  This experience helped to ignite the young people's desire to perform on stage and engage the audience with an exciting show.

How did youth workers and arts workers work in partnership?

The Presenter is responsible for contacting and arranging local artists to join the project.  Local artists should have expertise in an area that will merge well with the ISH's disciplines.  However, if a local artists is an expert in a distinct discipline that is novel to the location then it would be beneficial to incorporate it into the residency.  The local artist will lead a workshop.  The maximum number of artists that can be involved in the residency is three.  For example:

  • A graffitti artist to create the show's decor with the help of the young people and ISH staff.
  • A musician to teach percussion and body rhythms.
  • A visual artist to design and create costumes with the young people and ISH staff.

Top

How was the project evaluated?

ISH and the Presenter representative met every night after a rehearsal to evaluate the day and what needs to be addressed the following day.

After the return to The Netherlands an evaluation report will be made by the ISH company manager.  The Presenter representative also makes a final evaluation report.  Both parties will send one another their reports.

Top

What were the main outcomes measured?

Overwhelming reactions from families and audience during the final performance.  Furthermore the Presenter and the artists were deeply moved by the enthusiasm and motivation from the youngsters.  Relationships were established between the children, the Cleveland community, the theatre (arts in general were made appealing to young people), and the local artists.  An opportunity to continue developing their skills with professionals from their own community was established.
